Before we can stand up for our rights, before we can organize for a strong democracy and a just society, we need to know our rights. Universal human rights are for all of us - regardless of nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status. On top of that, the U.S. Constitution protects the human rights of all those residing in the United States.

But it is up to all of us to ensure that constitutional rights and equal justice are upheld by law enforcement. It's vital that we all are prepared and informed regarding our rights before, during, and after interacting with ICE, local police, or other authorities.

And there are certainly those who don't believe human rights should be universally recognized, those who selectively believe in the Constitution and don't want it applying to undocumented residents. But while they Say Fear...We Say Knowledge, Power, Community Organizing!

Organizers and OneAmerica base groups across the state are holding Know Your Rights! workshops in more than nine cities and transforming fear into a movement for exercising our rights.

The strongest tool against anti-immigrant sentiment is knowing our rights, being informed on the issues, and advocating against the harsh enforcement policies that separate our families and keep workers living in the shadows. This is democracy in action! It’s the movement we will need to build our voices and protect immigrant rights in Washington State.

The Obama Administration has increased efforts at implementing programs that link local law enforcement to fedreal immigration policies despite the lack of trust this promotes in our local communities. Inform yourself on what is happening, threats and opportunities for our communities, and what you can do locally to advocate for pro-immigrant policies!
