There are so many challenges facing our communities.  Challenges that will only be solved when WE become more powerful.  OneAmerica’s 2020 Online Power Building Institute can help take you there.  The institute is a series of trainings focused on 4 areas: Team and Power-Building, Political Education, Issue Campaigns, and Electoral Campaigns.

Trainings are FREE to OneAmerica leaders.  We are asking allies to pay $50 per training. 

Space is limited in each training, so it is important that you only register for trainings that you know you will attend and that you follow through on attending once you register.   If something happens that will prevent you from attending, please let me know so we can open a spot for someone else.

Team and Power-Building Trainings

Power: Power is necessary to change the world. . . but most of us are conflicted about it.  Let’s explore how to build power and what it means for you personally.

Political Education Trainings

History of Immigration: Learn about the immigration system in the context of exploitation and capitalism. We will explore the dominant narratives surrounding the politics of immigration and how we can collectively change that dominant narrative.

Race & Racism in the US: Learn about racism, anti-blackness, and colonialism and its relationship to issues of detention, mass incarceration, and policing. We will explore the dominant narrative around police brutality and mass incarceration and learn about the importance of cross-racial organizing throughout various points in history.

Feminism and the Power of Finding your Voice:  Learn about feminist movements in Latin America, particularly Mexico and Central America.  Practice using the power of your voice through storytelling.  Immigrant women of color are particularly encouraged to join us!

Racial Capitalism:  Of all the isms, racism is most tied in with capitalism as twin drivers of the American economy and social structure.  We will explore a framework for thinking about this interconnection, and how we organize to undo it.

Who runs Washington State?   A power analysis of any state reveals that a handful of powerful people really decide what policies will become law and which ones will die.  Who are those folks in Washington, what is their agenda, and how do we organize more people power for our agenda?

Power Organizations:  OneAmerica is a power organization, as distinguished from an advocacy or service organization.  But what do those distinctions mean?  How do we use them to identify ways we can become more powerful?

Issue Campaigns Trainings

Cutting an Issue/Power Analysis:  Winning campaigns have a solid foundation.   We know our goals, and we understand the power structure we are trying to move to win.   We will explore the necessary organizing concepts of a winning campaign.

Research Visits:  Research visits are a powerful tool for planning the details of a campaign, from demands and targets to strategy and tactics.  And they are really fun as well!  No leader in community organizing should be without this important practice!

Direct Action:  Sometimes, in order to win, we need to take action that escalates the urgency of what is needed for our communities.  But how do we do that safely and effectively?  This training will tell you how.

Public Meetings:  Public meetings are a powerful tactic for securing public commitments to our priorities from those that we want to hold accountable.  OneAmerica will be hosting a virtual public meeting this fall and we need all leaders to attend this training to help plan and lead this important event!

Campaign Strategies & Tactics:  Once you have done the research and decided the focus of your campaign, you need to plan your strategies and tactics!   Learn about some best practice for this kind of planning from a senior organizer.

To win on immigration, education and economic justice, we have to elect people like us, who represent us and are accountable to our communities.
