The Big Betrayal Bill Attacks all Washingtonians
OneAmerica Denounces Signed Budget That Will Take Away Health Care, Food from Millions to Supercharge Family Separations and Give Tax Cuts to Billionaires and Corporations
Seattle, WA – On July 4, 2025 President Donald Trump signed into law a budget that will cut millions from health insurance and food assistance to give tax breaks to billionaires and fund mass deportations. Here in Washington, this bill will strip approximately 444,000 people of health insurance coverage, cut food assistance of nearly 149,000 people, and put 8,500 jobs at risk of elimination.
Additionally, the budget will deeply impact immigrants across the country. It would provide $150 billion in largely unrestricted funds for immigration enforcement, make changes to immigration law, expand detention of immigrant children, and cut approximately 4.5 million children from the benefits of the Child Tax Credit.
Roxana Norouzi, Executive Director of OneAmerica, released the following statement regarding the budget signing:
“As many commemorate the independence of our country today – of a signed declaration that hinged on the values of all people being created equal, with unalienable rights which include life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, the president signs into law a budget that is bluntly un-American and does not represent the values our countries independence was built on.
Despite the efforts of so many to halt this bill, too many members of Congress made it abundantly clear that they were willing to put the interests of billionaires over the people they are meant to represent.
This bill is a betrayal to us all, no matter our race, immigration status or where we live. Here in Washington, it will leave thousands uninsured and at risk of poverty and hunger, while continuing to stoke fear by supercharging immigration detention, family separations and the disappearances of our neighbors, families and loved ones.
The consequences of this bill will be severe. Health insurance costs will go up. ICE raids will increase. And people will die preventable deaths. All while billionaires get another tax break at the expense of our communities.
All of this is a ploy to distract us from the Trump Regime’s incompetence. He hasn’t been able to deliver anything for working people but rather seeks to divide us and blame immigrants for the issues we are facing. But the truth is, Trump, Republicans and their billionaire backers are to blame. They are showing their true priorities: they don’t care about bringing down the cost of living. They don’t care about our basic needs. In fact, their plans make it even harder for families to pay bills and put food on the table.
But despite this huge setback, we aren’t done fighting. We will continue to organize working people and immigrants to hold the members of Congress who voted for this atrocious bill accountable. We will continue to fight the Trump regime’s deportation agenda, along with our partners, that seeks to rip our families and communities apart. We know that we all belong in Washington and when we move together, collectively, we can and will win.”
