OneAmerica Statement on SCOTUS Temporary Protected Status and Asylum Rulings that will put Thousands of Lives at Risk

Seattle, WA – Roxana Norouzi, the Executive Director of OneAmerica, a statewide member-based immigrant rights organization that supports asylum-seekers in Washington, shared the following statement in reaction to today’s Supreme Court rulings on the asylum program in Mullin v. Al Otro Lado that undermines the United States commitment to protect those fleeing persecution and Temporary Protected Status in Mullin v. Doe that puts thousands of lives at risk of losing legal status, work authorization, and protections from deportation.

“The United States has long been a place of hope and refuge, strongest when we welcome those seeking safety. Yet today, we are witnessing the largest effort in modern U.S. history to strip immigrants of protections and their rights, forcing families to live in constant uncertainty about their safety and future.”

In Washington, we’ve demonstrated there can be a better path. OneAmerica, alongside others, helped secure $75 million since 2024 for the WA-MASS program which provides critical services to recently arrived migrants and asylum-seekers.

“Instead of dismantling asylum and TPS, federal leaders should invest in welcoming policies and clear pathways to citizenship, not funneling billions to ICE & CBP to harm families and drain critical resources. The Supreme Court has once again handed this administration powerful tools to inflict lasting harm on immigrant communities but in the face of these attacks, we remain committed to building a Washington where everyone is welcomed and can thrive.”
