SCOTUS Reaffirms Birthright Citizenship as one of America’s Most Cherished Constitutional Right
OneAmerica statement on SCOTUS ruling that protects Washingtonians 14th Amendment rights
Seattle, WA – Today, in Barbara v. Trump in a 6-3 vote the Supreme Court of the United States reaffirmed birthright citizenship on constitutional grounds and struck down the Trump Administration’s attempt to rewrite our Constitution. If you are born in the United States, the Constitution guarantees all the freedoms citizenship entails. Citizenship opens the door to democratic participation and the promise of an inclusive America – from the fundamental freedom to vote in federal elections to running for office. The Trump Administration tried to break this promise and weaken the very protections that keep Washingtonians safe, healthy, and able to live with dignity.
Roxana Norouzi, the Executive Director of OneAmerica, a statewide member-based immigrant rights organization in Washington, shared the following statement following the ruling.
“Today’s ruling reaffirms a fundamental constitutional principle: everyone born on American soil is a citizen. Birthright citizenship has enabled families to place roots, pursue opportunities, and build a stronger America and vibrant Washington state. No president has the power to decide which child is worthy of being “American enough.” This ruling is a relief, but the fight is far from over. Instead of terrorizing our communities and dehumanizing our neighbors, the federal government should focus on creating jobs, raising wages, lowering costs, and creating a more humane and just immigration system. OneAmerica will continue to build power in Washington state to protect our democracy and fundamental rights to ensure that all immigrant communities can thrive.”
